Ingredients

For the Cocktail:

  • 1 orange slice plus extra for garnish
  • 1 oz spiced simple syrup (recipe follows)
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • 3 oz whiskey, bourbon, or homemade spiced whiskey (recipe follows)
  • maraschino cherry to garnish
  • 1 large ice cube

For Spiced Simple Syrup:

  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3-inch orange peel strip
  • 1 medium cinnamon stick
  • 2 whole cloves

For Homemade Spiced Whiskey (optional):

  • 1 cup whiskey
  • 2 medium cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 allspice berries
  • 3-inch orange peel strip

Instructions

To make spiced simple syrup:

  • Combine water, sugar, orange peel, cinnamon stick, and cloves in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil for about 2 minutes to dissolve sugar.
  • Remove from heat and cover. Steep for 45-60 minutes. Strain out solids and refrigerate simple syrup in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

To make spiced whiskey:

  • Combine whiskey, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, and orange peel in an airtight container. Keep at room temperature for 2 days to steep.
  • Taste whiskey after 2 days. If mixture is not "spicy" enough to your liking, allow to steep for up to 4 days. Strain out spices and orange peel once desired spice intensity is reached. Store at room temperature for up to three months.

To make the cocktail:

  • In a cocktail shaker, muddle together orange slice, spiced simple syrup, and bitters.
  • Add whiskey and a handful of ice. Cover and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until shaker is ice-cold.
  • Strain into rocks glass over one large ice cube. Garnish with orange slice and cherry.

Notes

*Spiced Whiskey recipe makes one cup, multiply as needed to make a larger batch.
  • Use large format ice cubes or spheres to prevent over-dilution
  • Gently muddle the orange to extract oils without creating bitterness
  • Make spiced whiskey and syrup ahead for quick cocktail assembly
  • Both infused whiskey and syrup store well for batch preparation
