Hello and welcome!
My name is Maryanne and I am The Little Epicurean! How did I get my moniker? Standing at barely 5 feet tall (little) and devoted to the pursuit of pleasures, especially to the enjoyment of good food and comfort (epicurean), put them together and that’s my name.
Born and raised in Southern California, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Although, I did try a brief stint in the Bay Area and Chicago. Unfortunately, both places didn’t last very long. I currently live in Los Angeles with my husband, Alex, and our two pups, Charlie and Taylor.
After graduating from UCLA, I took a massive detour and found myself in culinary school. I studied at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley and The French Pastry School in Chicago.
On this website, I share from-scratch recipes (mainly desserts) and the occasional travel guide post. I have a crazy love for recipe development and I love experimenting in the kitchen. My passion lies with butter, sugar, and flour.
Through approachable recipes, I hope to share with you the joys of baking and home cooking. I believe you should always save room for a little something sweet, which is probably why I share so many dessert recipes!
All my life, my friends have called me a “feeder.” I like to feed people, it’s the way I show others I care. I love you means nothing unless you back it up with a chocolate cake. The same for goes for apologies. Sorry is only genuine with a dozen donuts.
My idea of a perfect meal involves lots of noodles, dumplings and rice. Yes, I am all about carb-loading. While I am lactose-intolerant, I am more than willing to endure the pain and bloating for a double scoop of ice cream in a chocolate dipped waffle cone.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Where do you get the inspiration for your recipes?
All over the place. I read a lot of food magazines and have a growing collection of cookbooks. Friends and family are a big influence. I love being challenged to create new and exciting recipes. I’m also partial to seasonal produce and ingredients. If I happen to find something at the farmer’s market or fruit growing in my parents’ backyard, its going to find its way to my blog.
What is your background in food?
I love to eat. I love to cook. And I love to feed others. Asides from that, I am formally trained in baking and pastry arts. I studied at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena, CA. I continued on to specialize in cakes (primarily wedding cakes) at The French Pastry School in Chicago, IL. By no means do I think culinary school is necessary to become a good cook.
I’m doing a round-up post and I want to feature your photograph. Is that okay?
I’m honored and yes, you may! You may use ONE photo as long as you link back to the source. Please provide clear attribution to my site.
Can I reprint a recipe from your site or use your photos on my blog/tumblr/website?
I work really hard to create and develop the recipes on my website. I ask that you please rephrase the recipe in your own words if you plan to use it on your blog.
I spend a great deal of time preparing and photographing the food on my site. If you would like to use ONE photo, you may as long as you credit me and provide a link back to the source. If you would like to use more than one photo, please email me.
Can you review this product, host a giveaway, or blog about this event?
Maybe. I only review products and events that are relevant to The Little Epicurean. Please email me to discuss the details.
What kind of dog is Charlie?
I have no idea. I adopted him from Cuddly Canines, an amazing rescue organization in Orange County. If you are in the Southern California area and are looking for a new family member, I highly suggest adopting from Cuddly Canines. There are countless puppies and mommy dogs that need forever homes.
Anyway, from Charlie’s mannerist and characteristics, I would assume that he is a Dachshund-Chihuahua mix.
I appreciate respectful and friendly comments. Constructive criticism is also welcome. However, because I want The Little Epicurean to be a positive and uplifting environment, I reserve the right to remove rude, offensive or inappropriate comments. Please play nice.
