Raspberry Tequila Cocktail

Tequila Sunrise (orange juice, grenadine, and tequila) was the first drink my dad taught me how to make. This is my modern version of the drink with a fresh spin.

I muddle fresh raspberries with a little agave syrup instead of grenadine. Same gorgeous sunrise layers, but with real fruit flavor instead of straight sugar syrup. It’s more refreshing, a little less sweet, and just tastes better!

Recipe Highlights

  • Raspberries > grenadine. Muddled berries add natural tartness and body that bottled grenadine can’t match.
  • Agave instead of sugar syrup. Milder sweetness that lets the orange juice shine.
  • Fresh-squeezed juice only! Skip the bottled juice. Fresh squeezed truly makes a difference.

  • Citrus Squeezer: Fresh juice does wonders!
  • Mini Measure Shot Glass: The key to excellent well balanced cocktails is proper measurements! Don’t eyeball it.
  • Muddler: Easy mash and muddle soft fruits and herbs into cocktails using a sturdy muddler.

Which Tequila to Use

Go with blanco (silver) tequila. Since it is unaged, the raspberry and citrus flavors are allowed to shine. Plus, it gives you the brightest red hue in the glass. Reposado and añejo are aged in wood and bring in caramel and oak notes that muddy the fruity profile you’re going for here.

Notes

Batching for a crowd? Multiply everything by the number of servings and muddle the raspberry-agave base in a pitcher first. Make sure to stir well before pouring and serving.
Want it less strong? Cut the tequila to 1 oz and top with a splash of soda water.
