Typically everyone reaches for champagne to toast the new year. Here’s something a little different. Ernest Hemingway once said, “I drink to make other people more interesting.” I hope that’s not the case for you on New Year’s Eve. I like to surround myself with people I wouldn’t mind being stuck on a deserted island with. It’s best to start the new year with those you actually enjoy being around. Whatever the case, you deserve a tasty drink (be it a cocktail or a non-alcoholic sparkling apple cider) in hand when the clock strikes 12. Ingredients This combination of white rum, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and maraschino liqueur was a favorite of Hemingway. He drank it so much that the cocktail eventually was named after him. Traditionally, it is made with maraschino liqueur. I didn’t have any, so I substituted some maraschino cherry liquid- thus giving it that pretty pink hue. Growing up, I was a fan of those super bright red maraschino cherries. Those days are long gone. Now, I swear by these Merry Maraschino cherries by Tillen Farms. I love them because they’re made without artificial colors, dyes, or flavors. They are available at BevMo and various online retailers. Cheers, friends!
