Homemade strawberry basil frozen yogurt combines sweet ripe strawberries, fresh basil, and Greek yogurt for one refreshing and delicious summer treat! This recipe can be churned and frozen to a creamy consistency. Or, choose to freeze the mixture to create popsicles!
A couple of summers ago I was addicted to frozen yogurt. Pinkberry, Yogurtland, Menchies, you name it, I was there loading my yogurt cup full of toppings and goodies.
I can’t remember the last time I went out to get froyo. However, if those frozen yogurt machines were inexpensive and available for home use, I’d totally have one installed in my kitchen. I’d have frozen yogurt all the time and constantly experiment to come up with the perfect flavor profiles.
Ingredients
This easy to make frozen yogurt recipe uses a handful of simple ingredients. You will need plain Greek yogurt and heavy cream (also labeled as heavy whipping cream). The yogurt base is flavored with fresh strawberries and fresh basil. Granulated sugar and a touch of finely grated lime zest brings a bright sweetness.
Use fresh ripe strawberries for best results! The recipe will work with thawed frozen strawberries. However, fresh strawberries are best!
If you don’t have basil or don’t like basil, simply omit. You’ll still end up with a delicious strawberry frozen yogurt. I have always associated basil with savory foods (think pesto pizza, pesto pasta, basil soup). Lately, I have noticed basil and other herbs becoming more popular with desserts!
With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to experiment adding basil to other sweet treats such as this strawberry basil granita.
Recipe Options
This froyo is nothing like the soft serve you get at the yogurt shop. It has a scoop-able texture like ice cream and sorbet. If you don’t have an ice cream machine, this same recipe can be used to make popsicles.
Simply pour the mixture into freezer safe molds. I recommend plain molds that allow for easy unmolding. Here are some options from Amazon: 6 piece set, stackable molds, or reusable ice pop molds.
Asides from strawberry, this recipe works well with mango, raspberries, or passion fruit.
